Camden Yard

April 2017

Maximising on space.

Challenge: A small residential garden and front garden, in Camden, North London. The back garden was very small, and with little direct sunlight, quite damp and dark. The front was overlooked by a busy street.

Approach: To make the space feel larger and less confined, a minimal material palate was used to keep the design simple.

The slatted western red cedar screens provide a boundary on both sides whilst allowing light and airflow into the space.

The London Stone Italian porcelain paving is bright in colour to light up the space and add some warmth.

The inclusion of long rectangular polished stainless steel mirrors offer an elegant and luxurious feeling, while adding an element of fun. The mirrors also reflect a fragment of the planting and lighting.

On the large London Victorian stock brick wall at the back of the site a green wall was installed to bring more greenery to the garden without using up limited ground space. For the green wall evergreen plants, with lots of foliage and structure were chosen for a rich, lush feel to soften the effect of the brick. A drip irrigation system was installed.

Warm LED spot lighting, laid in dark grey basalt stone, was used to highlight the green wall, as well as under the balau bench seating. The garden takes on an entirely new feeling in the evening.

The same materials were used in the front garden to bring coherence to the two spaces.
